About Me- My Story

Breaking and popping came into my life in 1984 when I was 14
years old. I had never seen it or heard of it. My brother had a friend named
James  asked me in our garage if I had
ever seen someone tick. I said tick, what is that. He told me to go and get my
“box” (boom box) to play some music. I played Candy Girl by New Edition. He
started popping first, and then he started ticking from his finger tips down
his arm and through his chest down to his feet, back up and out the other side
of his body through his right arm.

I was beyond shocked!
I demanded that he show me how to do this instantly! I learned quickly.
I was hooked for life from that point on until this day. I even started to wear
the breakin clothes. You know the suede Nikes or Pumas, and the windbreaker
jumpsuits.

I practiced every day, or at least until I could steal the mirror
from my brother practicing his Michael Jackson moves (he was really good). I
told my friends about what James showed me and they wanted to learn to. I
showed them and we started our own little group. We didn’t even have a name we
just loved to break dance.

Chad was good at foot work. This is what you do before you
get on the ground to do your spins. Derek was pretty good at break dancing, and
ticking. I was just good at ticking. Where we any good as a group? Not really.
We had fun and that’s what it was all about for us.

I even got into a few battles. That’s was the beauty of
break dancing. If someone heard that you were pretty good, you better believe
you were going to get challenged to a battle sooner or later. I was in the 8th
grade. I was in the lunch line when out of nowhere this guy started popping and
started to take my head off, boxed it up and ate it and spit it out on the
ground and stepped on it.

When you battle this is a insult or a sign of
disrespect. Everyone said…”oooh you gonna let him get you like that”. I was
kind of nervous because a lot of people heard I could tick but I would never
show them.

I knew I couldn’t let this ride my reputation was on the
line. Since he threw my head on the floor I picked my head off the floor and
put it back on my head with ticking moves of course. Then I started popping and
ticking around him. It was pretty much over after that. I had won my first
battle!

Then in 1984 the movie Breakin came out and changed
everything. My mother surprised me one day and said we’re going to see Breakin.
I was so excited.

I couldn’t believe what I was seeing on the screen. I had
never really seen anyone do it on TV. Ozone (Aldolfo Quiones) Turbo (Michael
Chambers) and my favorite Electro Rock played by Bruno Falcon aka Poppin Taco.
These 3 were the best I had ever seen.

Ozone with his locking and smooth ticking, Turbo with his
incredible foot work break dancing and popping. Electro Rock had the best
popping that I had ever seen and is still one of the best today. I studied all
three and tried my best to be like them. Everyone did. Breakin was a hit in the
urban community. Later movies like Beat Street would soon emerge.

This site will pay tribute to some of the best poppers in
the world. Breakin and popping has re-emerged as one of today’s hottest dances.
Popping competitions are happening all around the world. Some of the best
poppers I have seen are from other countries.

I created this site because I wanted to pay homage to those
legends who gave me something to do and feel part of. Breakin and poppin was a movement and I am
happy to say I was part of it. Back then if you had beef with someone you could
settle it with a dance battle. The new generation has done well with learning
how to pop and incorporate it with the latest dances.

Let’s not forget those who started break dancing and popping,
and had no idea that it would not just be a fad that would die out but instead
would last forever.

Peace

B

History Of Popping

History Of Popping Dance

It was eventually the robots in the media shows in early ’60s like “Lost within Space” that inspired the african american kids in Los Angels to invent the dance the Robot. I really don’t think mime has been as great an affect, in the end, the volume of shows provides Marcel Marceau completed in W?

Clearly mime has been inspiring within the development along with perfecting from Robot. The sense of animation and futurism can be strong in several poor inner-city youngsters since it is a getaway for some world where situations are excellent, sharp, along with charge. Your hydraulic actions from the robotic danced to music that was getting increasingly robotically rhythmic, like James Brown’s “Goodfoot” (1969), would have been a natural rise in La, a major city of major street boogie masterpieces.

In 1969, a youthful dark guy through the title regarding Don Campbell was becoming identified among street ballet dancers throughout La for inventing the dance referred to as Campbellock (he launched accurate documentation generally known as “Perform the Campbellock”). Put on Campbell required the hydraulic software actions, that have been about full control and mixed the idea with wild, unmanageable motion dances from the tap-expensive dance days in addition exact stop and begin activities and spiced everything with witty facial expressions and clown-like fancy dress costumes to develop another dance motion that is still going powerful often known as “Securing” (Campbellocking to us outdated men. I resided within L.A. if this very firstbecame available and was a fantastic Campbellocker myself.)

The obvious way to describe the particular movement of securing may be thus: You realize individuals little-figured toys and games which are like inside-out puppets on modest plastic circular platforms or even pedestals, so when you press the particular foot within the woking platform the actual figure collapses real quick, any time you let your hand up it dates back suit? Well that is what securing seems like. The body moves unmanageable after that back to control nipping directly into position, deteriorating then getting mad back.

Through the Early ’70s Put on Campbell had developed an entire folks of lockers also known as “The Lockers.” On the list of lockers was Shabadoo, the star regarding “Breaking,” and Penguin, who had previously been the actual overweight locker named “Rerun” throughout the Tv show “What Is Happening.Inch The lockers from your early ’70s used platform shoes, noisy candy striped stockings, called pants that quit inside the knees, vibrant vibrant satin t-shirts with significant collars, large colorful ribbon ties, gigantic Apple Child hats, and whitened baseball gloves.

Around that point a acknowledged TV choreographer named Toni Tulsi, who had been well-known for shows like “Shindig,Inch and “Hullaballoo,” discovered Wear Campbell and the Lockers and assisted carry these to worldwide fame. The lady was an amazing dancer their self and very quickly learned to fasten. She evolved into part from your Lockers, assisted develop their party act, and also got them in the media shows like “Saturday Evening Live” and also advertisements for example Schlitz Malt Liquor Alcohol (the main one using the bull).

Going to seeing her and  Campbell dance  in a night club known as Crenshaw Houses in L . a .. I became amazed. She was a lot better than he was!

Additionally at about the time “Soul Train” reached the community (1972) additionally it started to be an immediate media hit simply by featuring street ballroom dancers, especially the Lockers, of los angeles. The disco Crenshaw Residences that lived in the apartment on Crenshaw Blvd in Los Angeles. This was where  the “Soul Train” gang hung out.

During those times breaking was developing throughout New York. The Robot was becoming  popular in los Angeles. All through 1972 and ’73 in Fresno, Ca, a little city midway in between La and Serta Francisco, the black group of all kids were inventing new things of their own. They were known as the  electrical Boogaloo. Pistol Pete (which also starred around the motion picture “Breaking” and was associated with Toni Tulsi plus the Lockers and “Soul Train” in the past) and the brothers and sisters had produced The Power Boogaloo by mixing and securing their identities.

The particular Robot, as well as the more easy and controlled actions involving mime. As an alternative to tossing their systems interior and exterior handle like securing, or perhaps in overall hydraulic control such as the Automatic robot, they passed energy via their physiques popping and also nipping elbows, arms, neck, sides and the majority of our bodies joints on the way. Electric Boogaloo would have been a much more like mime meaning the idea pantomimed an active wire of electric powered current, however it still necessary the control of The Automatic robot allow it style.

The Power Boogaloo grew to be large in San francisco bay area before it hit L . a . however, when it did strike L.A., the television cash all over the world, it had been introduced by means of “Soul Train” because the new dance kind and challenged the recognition involving securing. The Electrical Boogaloo (as well as Electric Boogie as it is considered while now) has since distributed to New You possibly can while breaking later hit Los angeles. It’s interesting to determine smashing and securing existing inside the same sub-cultures.

I believe it’s somewhat mainly because they compliment one another since they are opposites. The popping dance is a charge and has an inclination to mimic those things of character as being a lightning bolt or possibly a rippling lake, whereas breaking is much more unrestrainable and anti-character or anti-gravitational such as soaring saucer. One more reason why these are generally finished with the identical kids can also be that they are the two competitive dances where ballroom dancers combat one another to find out who’s finest. “If my breaker can’t defeat you, my boogie can easily.” They reside in the exact same competitive atmosphere.

Because of the cut-throat character, I see popping dancealso as being a competitive activity. This may appear odd simply because it is  unlike breaking.
